I was born in an army base hospital so it's hard to call that home. My mother was from New Orleans so when my father went overseas we lived in New Orleans to be near family. My great grandfather Laudumiey started a funeral home in town in the late 1800's. It seems it was fashionable to be buried by him. My mother played in coffins as a child and Mardi Gras was a part of our life. My grandmother made costumes for her sisters Mardi Gras Balls.

While it was never spoken in our predominant catholic family I believe that some "powers" passed to some of each generation. I've felt different from the time I was a child and never felt I belonged in that church. As soon as I was of age I no longer participated in the church rituals and beliefs.

I have lived in many towns since and no place can compare. The mystique of New Orleans is like no other.

Katrina must have been horrible for you. I have never been to New Orleans but would love togo there sometime. I find the funeral procesions with the bands and the music to be totally unique in US culture.

I visited New Orleans in September 2009, and a was inspired by the place. To stand on Bourbon Street on a balmy night after the rain and hear live jazz playing through the streets was a unique experience.....So was gumbo ! 0.o

I can relate to never feeling as though I was a part of the church, much to my own granmothers chagrin. But she loved me anyway ;)
